After many years of script treatments and attempts at building the magical film, Warner Bros is finally filming Shazam next year.
Everybody knows I’m a huge fan of DC Comics. I love all the heroes and villains, and I’ve always been disappointed in Warner Bros’ lack of film representation for them. Don’t get me wrong, I know it isn’t easy. It’s also not a requirement of them to make the films, either. They have so many franchises in their back pocket. That way if one fails — Looney Tunes, Harry Potter, DC Comics — it’s almost no loss to them.
Now, after many years of (barely) trying…Shazam! is coming to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter (link below), David F. Sandberg will direct the film. I’ve actually just recently caught Lights Out and thought it was pretty impressive for a mid budget horror movie. It wasn’t as scary as I’d hoped, but it showed Sandberg’s strengths as a director. His new film — Annabelle: Creation — has received nothing but universal praise over the course of the past few weeks. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one!
It seems like Dwayne Johnson’s involvement in the Shazam! film is still in limbo. Let’s be honest, is this a surprise to anyone? It seems clear that Warner Bros only made a contract with him to play Black Adam so Marvel or any other competitor couldn’t scoop him up. The man is the busiest guy in Hollywood and while I’m sure he has intentions of playing Teth-Adam, it’s probably not going to work out for another five or so years.
Besides, the casting of Billy Batson and Shazam is far more important than the anti-hero of Khandaq. If WB doesn’t use this to bring an unknown to the forefront (in parallel to Billy Batson’s story) than they’re really missing out on creating a homegrown star. They groomed Sandberg into loyalty, and I’m sure they could do the same with Shazam!
Now, our website isn’t a DC Comics website. It’s a Zack Snyder site, who seems to be the godfather of the universe. Unfortunately, after his family tragedy it doesn’t seem like he’s on board as producer for these films anymore. It’d be a real loss to us fans if he’s stepping down from the mantle for good, but whatever’s best for him is best for the films as well. So with that, DC will be talked about very lightly on here until it’s confirmed whether or not Zack Snyder is returning to the multiverse.
Also, let’s hope we get this badass shit in the DC Extended Universe. Justice League 2, maybe?
